Structure Climate Crisis Coalition: Together for climate justice

Since 2020, the Climate Crisis Coalition (KCC) has been organizing one or more Climate Marches annually. Together with more than 100 allies, we mobilize tens of thousands of people to raise awareness of the urgency of the climate crisis and demand change.

To facilitate this, we work with a clear structure that prioritizes collaboration, transparency and democratic decision-making.

How we co-operate
The Coordination Council (CR)

The Coordination Council (formerly the Steering Committee) determines the strategic, political, and financial framework of the Climate March. This includes: when and where the march will take place, its central message, and how the organization will be funded.

The Council consists of representatives from various segments of the climate movement: from grassroots and youth organizations to trade unions and environmental organizations. Each organization serves for two years and is elected by the allies.

Responsibilities of the Council:

  • Developing the strategic and political framework for the Climate March.
  • Determining the budget and funding.
  • Appointing and supporting the project group.
  • Preparing and facilitating the Allies’ Meeting.

A small team within the CR supports internal processes. Their responsibilities include:

  • Planning agendas and chairing meetings.
  • Financial overview.
  • Project group HR.

The Project Team is carrying out the Climate March within the framework of the CR. This team consists of a project leader and coordinators, each with their own responsibilities, such as communication, logistics, or mobilization.

Their work is intensive and project-based: they ensure that the march actually takes to the streets.

More than 100 organizations support the Climate Crisis Coalition. They mobilize their supporters, contribute financially, or form thematic blocs during the march.

We distinguish between two types of alliance:

Active allies

  • Pay a membership fee based on their ability to pay.
  • Have voting rights in the Allies’ Meeting.
  • Can submit motions and run for the Coordinating Council.

Supporting allies

  • Have no formal say or voting rights.
  • Are visible as allies and help mobilize for the Climate March.

We strive to make important decisions through sociocratic decision-making. This means we work together to identify proposals that have no fundamental objections. This ensures broad support for decisions.

If an impasse does occur, a decision can still be made with a 75% majority.

The Climate Crisis Coalition is funded through:

  • Membership fees from active allies (based on ability: €25 – €1200 per year).
  • Crowdfunding and fundraising.
  • Project-based contributions from organizations.

Greenpeace Netherlands currently manages the finances. In the longer term, we will explore the possibility of establishing an independent foundation.

The KCC has grown organically in recent years. With this new model, we aim to:

  • Work more professionally.
  • Offer greater transparency.
  • Increase democratic engagement.

This way, we build a strong, broad, and inclusive movement that fights together for climate justice for all.
