Afgelopen zondag gingen 85.000 mensen de straat op voor klimaat en rechtvaardigheid. We kijken terug op de grootste mars rondom dit thema die ooit in Nederland is georganiseerd. Klimaatrechtvaardigheid is wat ons als Klimaatcrisis Coalitie verbindt. Met een gezamenlijke brede boodschap en gezamenlijke eisen riepen we Nederland op om de straat op te gaan. De opkomst van zondag liet zien dat een heel groot deel van de Nederlanders deze doelen onderschrijft.
Tijdens het podiumprogramma van de mars hebben wij ruimte willen bieden aan verschillende aspecten van klimaat en rechtvaardigheid. Oorlogen en conflictsituaties in de wereld zijn daar een belangrijk onderdeel van, gezien de wereldwijd oplaaiende conflicten, waar ook toenemende droogte, waterschaarste en de strijd om grondstoffen een belangrijke oorzaak van zijn. Zonder vrede geen klimaatrechtvaardigheid. Daarom wilden wij ook een podium bieden voor een verhaal rondom dit thema.
Het was vanaf het begin een zoektocht naar hoe we respectvol en op een verbindende wijze stil konden staan bij het leed dat het conflict in Palestina en Israël met zich meebrengt. Het doet ons pijn dat het ons als coalitie niet gelukt is die boodschap genoeg recht te doen, we erkennen de emoties die hierbij zijn losgekomen.
We hebben allemaal kunnen zien waartoe dat leidde. In deze chaotische situatie heeft de organisatie de microfoon van sprekers uitgezet. Toen iemand uit het publiek het podium opklom, lukte het ons bovendien niet direct in te staan voor de veiligheid van onze sprekers. Dat hadden we moeten voorkomen. Het spijt ons dat er verdeeldheid en onveiligheid is ontstaan, zowel op het podium als in het publiek. Sprekers, artiesten en deelnemers moeten hun bijdrage in veiligheid kunnen doen tijdens de mars.
Omdat we een brede coalitie zijn met diverse organisaties heeft het na de mars lang geduurd om te reflecteren op wat er is gebeurd. Dit alles trekken wij ons aan en daarover gaan wij het noodzakelijke gesprek aan met elkaar en met onze bondgenoten. Om zo gezamenlijk te delen, te reflecteren en te leren. De verschillende crises hebben een krachtige beweging nodig, waar voor ieder van ons een plek is en we gezamenlijk opkomen voor een klimaatrechtvaardige toekomst. De 85.000 deelnemers hebben dat afgelopen zondag luid en duidelijk onderschreven.

Last Sunday, 85,000 people took to the streets for climate and justice. We look back on the largest march concerning this theme ever organized in the Netherlands. Climate justice is what unites us as the Climate Crisis Coalition. With a broad joint message and joint demands, we called on the Netherlands to take to the streets. Sunday’s turnout showed that a very large proportion of Dutch people endorse these views.
During the stage program of the march, we wanted to provide space for various aspects of climate and justice. Wars and conflict situations in the world are an important part of this, given the escalating conflicts worldwide, of which increasing drought, water scarcity and the struggle for raw materials are also an important cause. Without peace there is no climate justice. That is why we also wanted to provide a platform around this theme.
It has been a search, from the start, for how we could reflect on the suffering caused by the conflict in Palestine and Israel in a respectful and connecting manner.It hurts us that, as a coalition, we have not been able to do justice to that message, and we recognize the emotions that followed as a consequence.
We all saw what the result was in the end. In this chaotic situation, the organization has turned off the speakers’ microphones. Moreover, when someone from the audience climbed onto the stage, we were unable to immediately guarantee the safety of our speakers. We should have prevented that. We are sorry for the division and insecurity this has created, both on stage and in the audience. Speakers, artists and participants must be able to contribute safely during the march.
Because we are a broad coalition with various organizations, it took a long time after the march to reflect on what happened. We take this to heart, and will have the necessary discussions about this with each other and with our allies. To share, reflect and learn together.
